Job Summary:

The Licensed Mental Health Professional (LMHP), LPC or LCSW is responsible for delivering crisis response and stabilization services to individuals experiencing acute behavioral health challenges. Working as part of a multidisciplinary crisis team, the LMHP conducts clinical assessments, provides de-escalation and safety planning, and ensures timely coordination with hospitals, community partners, and follow-up providers. This position may involve mobile, in-home, telehealth, or site-based crisis work and requires adherence to DBHDS, Medicaid, and agency standards. LMHPs may be fully licensed (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, Clinical Psychologist) or under supervision as Residents or Supervisors registered with the Virginia Board of Health Professions.

Primary Responsibilities:

Crisis Assessment and Intervention: Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments and provide immediate crisis intervention to individuals experiencing behavioral health emergencies.

Treatment Planning and Documentation: Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, ensuring all documentation meets DBHDS standards and is maintained in accordance with regulations.

Collaboration and Coordination: Collaborate with team members, resource places to coordinate care and ensure effective crisis resolution.

Compliance with Regulations:

Adhere to all DBHDS and Medicaid standards, including timely completion of Serious Incident Reports and participation in regular case reviews.

Submit Service Authorization Requests (SAR) to identify MCOs to express clinical
and medical necessity for requested services. Participate in peer-to-peer reviews with identified
MCO, if required

Assessments: Conduct assessments and, if necessary, review and sign the Crisis Education and Prevention Plan (CEPP) for individuals moving between crisis services

Confidentiality: Maintain confidentiality and security of Protected Health Information (PHI) as outlined in the Confidentiality Agreement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

Knowledge:

  • Strong understanding of crisis intervention models and behavioral health best practices.
  • Knowledge of DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and clinical assessment techniques.
  • Familiarity with Virginia DBHDS regulations, Medicaid documentation standards, and HIPAA compliance.
  • Awareness of trauma-informed care principles and cultural competency.
  • Understanding community mental health resources and service coordination.

Skills:

  • Skilled in conducting risk assessments, safety planning, and de-escalation techniques.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation, treatment planning, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Ability to use electronic health records (EHR) and telehealth platforms effectively.
  • Clinical judgment to determine appropriate levels of care and referrals.

Abilities:

  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure or emergent situations.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and as part of a multidisciplinary crisis team.
  • Ability to establish rapport and maintain therapeutic boundaries with diverse populations.
  • Ability to respond flexibly to the needs of individuals in crisis, including evenings/weekends if required.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple priorities in high-stress, time-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor QMHPs, interns, or other unlicensed staff if needed.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in social work or counseling from an accredited program.

Must hold a valid Virginia license (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or Clinical Psychologist) or be registered as a Resident or Supervisee with the Board of Health Professions working toward licensure.

At least one year of clinical experience in crisis, emergency, or acute behavioral health is preferred.

Must possess a valid drivers license and reliable transportation (for mobile response roles).

Must have current CPR and First Aid. MANDT crisis intervention certification or willingness to obtain upon hire.

Training:

Clinicians must be currently certified in CPR, First Aid, MANDT, and verification of Tuberculosis screening.

Mobile Crisis Response (MCR) training or obtain

Background Investigation:

Staff must successfully complete a criminal background records check conducted by the DBHDS criminal background investigation unit.

Staff must also have a central registry check completed and must not have any history of positive findings.
