Hastings Insurance is currently looking for a Loss Control Consultant to join its Commercial Field Operations Team! This is a great opportunity for an occupational safety or risk management professional to play a key role in protecting the financial integrity of our policyholders.
Position Overview The Loss Control Consultant assists Hastings Insurance Company in maintaining its profitability. This includes providing services that protect the financial integrity of Hastings policyholders and assisting them with an essential element of the risk management process: Loss Control. This position conducts physical surveys of Commercial, Farm, or industrial accounts to support the underwriting decision process.
Position Location & Work Format This position is remote-based, with the individual working from home and traveling to our agent's offices and insureds' operating locations across Southern Central and Southeastern Michigan.Candidates must reside in or be able to relocate to this general region which includes the Metro Detroit, Greater Lansing, Jackson, or Ann Arbor areas.
Generally, this position works within Hastings' standard office hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Given the nature of the role, however, work may include occasional work outside of standard office hours.
Position Duties & Responsibilities - Conducts loss control surveys for written or prospective commercial or farm accounts and prepares a survey report that will assist an underwriter with their underwriting decision.
- Plans organizes, leads, and directs loss control activities for multiple policyholders simultaneously.
- Identifies and analyzes potential loss exposures and hazards through surveys.
- Informs policyholders, verbally and in writing, of identified hazards, utilizes risk solutions tools, and submits formal recommendations for effective loss control measures that reduce the risk of claims resulting in injuries or financial loss.
- Maintains working knowledge of the federal or state OSHA requirements for the territory assigned.
- Assists Hastings Insurance policyholders with their loss control activities by providing materials that can be used to develop a basic loss control program or assist with a risk management issue.
- Acts as a technical resource for policyholders, agents, Underwriting, team members, or other departments to help make effective decisions.
- Attends loss control seminars, conferences, and meetings arranged by Marketing as directed.
- Actively participates in professional development, i.e. continuing education or self-improvement.
- Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.
Candidate Qualifications & Requirements - Ability to work in a team-based culture to interact with team members and support company and department objectives.
- A bachelor's degree is required. A bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health or a related field or equivalent work experience is preferred.
- Two years minimum work experience in the insurance field, with an emphasis in loss control or Occupational Safety and Health.
- In lieu of prior Insurance Industry Loss Control experience, a certificate in General Insurance (INS) from the Insurance Institute of America (IIA) should be obtained within the first 2 years in the position, or equivalent internal training obtained.
- Associate in Risk Management designation is preferred or should be worked toward within the first two years of working in the position.
- Have good written and verbal communication skills. Be able to appropriately communicate ideas to others.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and adhere to all Company Fleet Safety guidelines.
